100 Years of Architecture of the New Republic – the Moravian-Silesian Region and Ostrava

This exhibition, which was launched at the Ostrava City Museum on Tuesday, 31 October, presents works of modern architecture made by leading architects working in our region between 1918 and present day. Buildings for this exhibition were selected according to the results of a poll organized in the spring of 2017 in which participated a representative sample of architects, historians and theorists of architecture. Significant buildings of the Moravian-Silesian Region and Ostrava are presented on nearly fifty panels with rich visual material, apt texts and architectural models. (more…)

This year’s Open Day with the Memory Chest Ostrava 2067

On Saturday 28 October from 1 pm to 6 pm, the Ostrava City Hall organized an Open Day. Those interested could participate in guided tours and visit interior of the Ostrava City Hall, including areas that are usually not open to the public. As part of the tour, visitors also met Mayor Tomáš Macura in his office. Furthermore, they could observe the city from the City Hall Viewing Tower and its viewing platform located 73 metres above ground or take part in the accompanying programme in Prokeš Square. (more…)

Leave a message for people living in Ostrava in 50 years

We can’t say for sure what Ostrava will look like in 50 years. What we can do, though, is send a message about the present, which will be stored in a wooden chest prepared by the City of Ostrava together with Cooltour Culture Centre as part of the initiative Ostrava 2067, which forms part of the celebrations of the 750th anniversary of the first written mention of Ostrava. The chest should be opened in exactly 50 years during the celebrations of the 800th anniversary of the city. (more…)

Book Ostrava in Dates newly published

On the occasion of the 750th anniversary of the first written mention of Ostrava, the City of Ostrava and the Ostrava City Archives have published already a second book on the history of Ostrava. The book Ostrava in Dates comes after a publication about medieval Ostrava. In over 2,100 records, the book presents the most important political, social, cultural and sports moments in the history of the city. (more…)

Open Day dedicated to the jubilee of Ostrava – accompanying programme

The Ostrava City Hall will open its door to the visitors again. It will be on Saturday, 28 October, on the anniversary of its opening ceremony. From 1 to 6 pm, visitors will be able to participate in guided tours of the representative areas finished by a face-to-face encounter with Mayor Tomáš Macura. At the same time will be open the City Hall Viewing Tower, and it will be accessible free of charge.

The accompanying programme in Prokeš Square will be dedicated to the 750th anniversary of the first written mention of Ostrava. Its name ‘Technology, Industry and Science Belong to Ostrava’ highlights the inseparability of these fields of human activity from the history of the city. The programme will be not only interesting but also instructive. The Technical University of Ostrava will present, for example, a live exhibition of iron production in a historic furnace and expositions of steam engines, robotics and cybernetics. The Dolní Vítkovice Area will prepare demonstrational experiments in the fields of physics, chemistry and logic. There will also be a giant gyroscope in which visitors can experience 3g forces experienced by astronauts or pilots of fighters. The Czech Radio Ostrava, which is a media partner of the event, will display historical exhibits associated with the beginnings of the broadcasting. The Ostrava Museum will exhibit historical items and models from the mining industry.

The programme will be livened up by a historical fashion show. The audience will see historical and contemporary uniforms and workwear of professions that are closely linked to Ostrava and that you may have already forgotten about. Children’s entertainment will be provided by four leisure centres, and catering will be prepared by restaurants employing socially disadvantaged people Mental Café and Spirála.

MEMORY CHEST

The project Memory Chest Ostrava 2067 gives to those interested the opportunity to record a message for the future generations in a makeshift recording studio in the ceremonial hall and post it on their social media accounts or have it sent via email. It will also be possible to record messages in the studio of the Czech Radio Ostrava, 2 Dr. Šmerala Street, from 10 am to 4 pm.

Exhibition to celebrate 110 years of the Antonín Dvořák Theatre

The Antonín Dvořák Theatre celebrates the 110th anniversary of its opening ceremony this year, and the anniversary coincides with the important historic jubilee of Ostrava. The theatre building and its surroundings underwent many changes and reconstructions, which are depicted by an outdoor photography exhibition. Since 28 September, the exhibition has been deployed in various parts of the city centre so that virtually anyone can come across it. It will last until 28 October. (more…)

Matiční gymnasium now with Rudolf Tlapák commemorative plaque

The celebrations of the 750th anniversary of the first written mention of Ostrava are accompanied by a series of anniversaries revolving around number seven, including the 120th anniversary of the founding of Matiční grammar school in Ostrava. It was ceremonially opened as the first Czech high school in the Ostrava region on 16 September 1897. On Thursday, 28 September, a commemorative plaque of Rudolf Tlapák, organizer of the cultural life in the Ostrava region during the First Czechoslovak Republic and director of the grammar school, was unveiled on the corner of Matiční and Šmeralova Street. The place was symbolically named Tlapák’s corner as a reminder of the fact that Šmeralova Street used to be called Tlapákova. The commemorative plaque was created in the studio of Jaroslav Koléška from the University of Ostrava. The city of Ostrava contributed 135 thousand Czech Crowns to its creation. The ceremony was attended by Mayor of Ostrava Tomáš Macura. (more…)

Five new stolpersteine

Ostrava has five new stolpersteine located in the Velká Street 12, and their overall number amounts to 60. The stolpersteine – cobblestones bearing a brass plate that are inserted into the pavement in front of homes of victims of Nazi extermination or persecution – were laid again by the initiator of the project Gunter Demnig himself. The stones belong to the members of the Kaufthal family – Hersch, Helena, Max, Alžběta and Alfred. (more…)

Historic bustle reminded us of Ostrava’s glorious past

The Silesian Ostrava Castle, the surrounding earthworks, Černá louka (Black Meadow) area and of course the square, which is located exactly in the same place as in the Middle Ages, and today we call it Masaryk Square, became for two days the venue for the amazing celebration of the 750th anniversary of the first written mention of Ostrava. The bustle, which brought together a number of knights, singers, soldiers from the times of the Habsburg Monarchy and many other historical figures, was opened by Mayor of Ostrava Tomáš Macura and his deputy Zbyněk Pražák. Century of Twists, or Ostrava in the 20th Century exhibition

The regular September exhibition, which is being prepared by the Ostrava City Archives in the foyer of the Ostrava City Hall, celebrates this year the 750th anniversary of the first written mention of Ostrava. It is called Century of Twists, or Ostrava in the 20th Century and is open to the public from the opening ceremony, which was held on 4 September, to 29 September – on weekdays from 8 am to 7 pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 am to 7 pm. This already twentieth year of the exhibition was opened by Mayor of Ostrava Tomáš Macura and director of the Ostrava City Archives Blažena Przybylová. (more…)

A commemorative medal was issued for the 750th anniversary of Ostrava

On the occasion of the celebrations of the 750th anniversary of the first written mention of Ostrava, there was issued a symbolic number of 750 commemorative medals. The design is a work of the academic painter Vladimír Pavlica from Ostrava-Hošťálkovice, one of the most respected Czech medalists. Silver medals are on sale at the Ostrava Information Service. Publication OSTRAVA Beginnings and Development of the Medieval City now on sale

Ostrava historians, archaeologists, preservationists and archivists have decided to contribute to the celebrations of the 750th anniversary of the first written mention of Ostrava by two publications intended for the professional as well as lay public. The first one called OSTRAVA Beginnings and Development of the Medieval City is already on sale in the branches of the Ostrava Information Service, the second one will be finished by autumn. (more…)

Fiesta in the streets of Ostrava

A fantastic spectacle and once-in-a-lifetime experience. Such will be the true Catalan fiesta which will take place in Ostrava on 30 June and 1 July. Over 250 artists from Spanish Catalonia will come to Ostrava to perform at this festival, which is organized as part of the celebrations of the 750th anniversary of the first written mention of Ostrava. ‘It’s going to be spectacular,’ said Deputy Mayor Zbyněk Pražák, who saw the performance with his own eyes on his business trip to Barcelona. 170 years of the Emperor Ferdinand Northern Railway

The city of Ostrava supported two different projects of the Moravian-Silesian Railway Museum with a grant from a fund for supporting projects celebrating the 750th anniversary of the first written mention of Ostrava. The first project is an exhibition celebrating 170 years of the Emperor Ferdinand Northern Railway, the second one is processing and printing of three publications on the history of the Lipník – Bohumín railway and the adjacent steam depot of Moravská Ostrava and workshops of the Emperor Ferdinand Northern Railway in Přívoz. A part of the whole year’s celebrations of the first written mention of Ostrava will be the contest for all people living in Ostrava VIAOSTRAVA 750. The winners can look for interesting prizes including the cruise with a luxurious ship on the Mediterranean area.
