On the occasion of the 750th anniversary of the first written mention of Ostrava, the City of Ostrava and the Ostrava City Archives have published already a second book on the history of Ostrava. The book Ostrava in Dates comes after a publication about medieval Ostrava. In over 2,100 records, the book presents the most important political, social, cultural and sports moments in the history of the city.
‘We have used an incredible amount of interesting material that has been accumulated over the past six years by the City Archives when preparing for us and media a weekly overview of the most interesting events in the history of the city,’ said Mayor of Ostrava Tomáš Macura.
‘The basis of the book consists of records that have been published in a calendar of historical events on the official Ostrava website during the past six years, but we have also added a lot of further information,’ said Blažena Przybylová, co-author of the book and director of the Ostrava City Archives. ‘Not only is the new publication a practical guide, but it will also serve as a basis for future studies of the history of Ostrava from the earliest times up to 2016,’ added Przybylová.
Records are divided into separate chapters with each chapter covering one century, except for the first one, which covers the timeline from 350 million years ago to the 9th century. Within each chapter, the data follow in a chronological order.
The text is indexed in three different ways. Local (geographical) index includes all the geographical locations mentioned in the text, name (personal) index includes personal names with a short bio of each person. The third index is a selective subject index.
Ostrava in Dates is available at branches of the Ostrava Information Service. It costs 560 Czech Crowns (approximately 22 euro).
