The Dolní Vítkovice Area, a unique cultural monument where between the years 1828 and 1998 coal was mined and pig iron was produced, forms an inseparable part of Ostrava.
The industrial complex has now turned into an educational, social and cultural centre of supra-regional importance. It encompasses the Gong Multifunctional Hall and its galleries, U6 – the smaller Science and Technology Centre, but also Landek Park with the largest mining exhibition in the Czech Republic. Skip hoist brings visitors to the top of the blast furnace no. 1, in the auditorium in the former gasometer Gong take place conferences, international congresses or concerts, and the U6 Science and Technology Centre provides fun for young and old alike. Other parts of the complex are the big Science and Technology Centre, which presents science and technology in a fun and interactive way, and the cultural district Hlubina, which attracts not only musicians and bands, but also sculptors, graphic artists, visual artists and lovers of concerts and other cultural events.
