People who gathered in Masaryk Square on 9 September before 10 am were eagerly awaiting an unusual event taking place in the open air – a festive Holy Mass. The Holy Mass took place as part of the celebrations of the 750th anniversary of the first written mention of the city of Ostrava. The main celebrant was Mons. František Václav Lobkowicz, Bishop of Ostrava-Opava.
The Holy Mass was also attended by Archbishop Emeritus of Katowice Mons. Damian Zimoń, Auxiliary Bishop of Ostrava-Opava Mons. Martin David, representatives of non-Catholic churches and a number of priests and deacons from Ostrava and its surroundings. At the festive Mass were also present representatives of the city and the region led by Mayor of Ostrava Tomáš Macura and representatives of partner cities as well as important social institutions of the city.
Part of the Mass was a sanctification of the flags of city districts, army, police, firemen and other bodies operating in the territory of the city of Ostrava.
