Leave a message for people living in Ostrava in 50 years

We can’t say for sure what Ostrava will look like in 50 years. What we can do, though, is send a message about the present, which will be stored in a wooden chest prepared by the City of Ostrava together with Cooltour Culture Centre as part of the initiative Ostrava 2067, which forms part of the celebrations of the 750th anniversary of the first written mention of Ostrava. The chest should be opened in exactly 50 years during the celebrations of the 800th anniversary of the city.

The ceremonial opening of the chest, attended by Mayor Tomáš Macura, took place on 16 October in Cooltour Culture Centre at Černá louka, where the chest will be open to the public during the opening times of the Centre. The chest will be closed and sealed on 29 November and then deposited in the foyer of the Ostrava City Hall. Anyone can leave their message for future generations, be it a text, a drawing or an interesting photo. You can bring your message from home or prepare it directly in Cooltour. Messages must be made on papers of a size no bigger than A4 and brought in a non-sealed envelope. They can be written with a marker pen Centropen 2631 document liner, a Chinese fountain pen, a pencil, a coloured pencil or in black India ink. They mustn’t be written with felt-tip pens or ballpoint pens as their ink blurs or soaks through other papers over time. Messages shouldn’t be printed either. Messages mustn’t contain any sexual, racist or other inappropriate subtext.

This initiative will be accompanied by a social media campaign with ten posts from celebrities encouraging people to participate in preparing the message for future generations.

The chest with the message for future generations will be ceremonially closed and sealed on Wednesday, 29 November, in Prokeš Square during a ceremonial ending of the celebrations of the 750th anniversary of the first written mention of Ostrava. For the next 50 years, it will be stored in the foyer of the Ostrava City Hall, and the only key will be guarded by Mayor, who will always hand it over to his or her successor.
